Potty training
hints to help you succeed
Begin Early
Try and put your
child on the potty when he or she is between the ages of 12 and 18 months. This
isn't to force him to do anything, but rather to get him used to sit on it.
When a child reaches the age of two, he is in the "no" stage and
often does not like having anything new introduced into his life without a
fight.
Make a Choice
If you chop and
change, it will be one of the most perplexing things for your child. Decide
when you want to begin toilet training and then stick to it. Don't start potty
training for a couple of days and then decide that tomorrow will be a busy day,
so forget about it and put diapers back on. This will keep confusing your child
and make potty training much more difficult for him or her.
Maintain Consistency
Be consistent
with the way you potty train, including the words you use, no matter what age
you start. Every member of your family, as well as any other adult involved in
your child's care, must do and say the same things.
Decide how you
are going to potty train your child before you begin, and then stick to your
decision.
When is it inappropriate to begin potty training?
Never begin
potty training when there will be a significant change or an amazing experience
in your child's life. What may appear to be a minor change throughout your life
could appear to be quite significant to your child. Going on vacation,
Christmas, moving home, or having someone visit for a few weeks are all times
when you should avoid starting your child on toilet training.
